Aurora (Ragg Mopp) passed on to the Lord at the age of 75 after a blessed and fulfilling life. A friends and family visitation will be at First Baptist Church, Rotan Texas on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 10 AM. Services will follow at 11 AM. The service will be presided over by Brother Werth Mayes of Stephenville TX, Brother Tommy Rosenblad of Brownfield, and Brother Scott Spruill of FBC Rotan.
Mopp was born in Rotan to LC (Salty) Price and Mabel Corine Etheredge Price on February 21, 1949. Aurora was a spitfire of a child, with curly red hair. Her daddy took to calling her Ragg Mopp after the popular Johnnie Lee Willis song of the day and kept it up simply because it annoyed his mother. The nickname stuck with her for the rest of her life. Mopp attended Rotan public schools and was a member of the graduating class of 1967. She attended Angelo State University, graduating with a degree in Elementary Education in 1972. Mopp married James David (Jim) Nowlin on April 18, 1970 in San Angelo. They returned to Rotan after graduating from Angelo State. Mopp considered herself fortunate to be hired by Rotan ISD as an early elementary teacher beginning in the fall of 1972. Hundreds of Rotan’s children, spanning multiple generations, were shaped by Ms. Nowlin as one of their elementary teachers. After 30 years of service teaching at all levels, from Kindergarten through 4th grades, Title 1 Reading, English-as-a-Second Language (ESL), and Gifted and Talented, she retired from teaching in 2002.
Mopp was raised in the Calvary Baptist Church in Rotan and gave her life to Jesus at the age of 6. After returning to Rotan, she and Jim became members of First Baptist. She served as a Sunday School Teacher for over 40 years. Her most treasured class was her time teaching the Senior Ladies. Those ladies enriched her spirit and taught her much more than she ever taught them. She loved God and His Church with her whole heart.
Mopp belonged to the Anne Pettus Shelburne Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Gamma Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. But her most fun organization was the Ladies Auxiliary of the Rotan Volunteer Fire Department. She was on the team that won the Texas State Ladies Pumper Race in 1979.
She is preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents, her sister Ruth Ann Kiser, and her brother Jack Price. Mopp is survived by her daughter Sarah Tumlinson Page and her husband Brian Page of Round Rock, her sons Scott Nowlin of Rotan and his wife Marisa, and David Nowlin of Columbus Ohio and his wife Rachelle. Also surviving are her brother-in-law Jerry Kiser of Abilene, her brother James Price and his wife Becky of Midland, her sister-in-law Carol Price of Rotan, her grandchildren Blake and Cheyanne Morris of San Diego California, Hunter Nowlin of Rotan, Jordan Page of Round Rock, Jackson Page of College Station, Brody and Adeline Nowlin of Columbus Ohio, and great-grandchildren Preston and Emersyn Morris. Auntie Mopp had the best nieces and nephews any aunt could ever have. She was so proud of the Price, Helms, Kiser, Stuckey, Eaton, Nowlin, Jones, and Neeley kids. Crazy Ole Auntie Mopp loved you all and was so proud of the men, women, husbands, wives, fathers and mothers you grew to be.
Mopp’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the wonderfully caring staffs of Heritage House on the Brazos in Rotan and Lyndale Abilene Memory Care. Please feel free to make any remembrances of Mopp to your favorite charity or program at your church. The First Baptist Church Rotan Youth or Children’s Fund would be Mopp’s choice.
