Dora Dee was born August 17, 1924, in the Pledger Community to J.D. and Elsie Lee Knox Mitchell. She attended school in Sylvester for eleven years, graduating at the age of seventeen. She had lived in Pledger until going to college at ACC now ACU, then graduated in 1944 at the age of twenty. Her first teaching job was in Ozona for five years. She then returned home to Pledger and taught for two years in McCaulley. In 1989, after teaching for thirtyfive years in Hamlin, she retired to Abilene. Ms. Mitchell taught typing, shorthand, business and bookkeeping. She was sponsor for Sr. Classes, Cheerleaders, Pep Squads, UIL Groups and received many honors for her dedication. Over the fortyfive years of teaching, Ms. Mitchell had a lasting influence on many of her students.
In Abilene she was a member of the ABWA Western Horizon Chapter and the Retired Teachers Association. Ms. Mitchell was a member of the Church of Christ. In 2013 she moved back to Fisher County to be closer to her family.
Dora Dee Mitchell was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and their wives Horace and Vera Lee Mitchell, Foy and Dessie Mitchell, Frank and Marjorie Mitchell, one sister and her husband Audie and Willard Burk, niece Gail Mitchell Kemmerling, two nephews Jerry Burk and Lee Swan.
She is survived by nieces and nephews Leonard and Debbie Mitchell, Frank and Karen Mitchell, Lou and Bob Puckett, Laverne and Malcolm Young, Lee Davis and Patsy Mitchell, Barbara Swan, Sharon and Bob Holston and numerous great nieces and nephews and close cousins.
