George Leon West

George Leon West, of Rotan passed away October 14, 2018. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at the Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home in Rotan. Burial will follow in Belvieu Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, October 16, 2018, from 6pm until 7pm, at Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home in Rotan.
Our father, George Leon West, passed from this world on Sunday, October 14, 2018 at Hendricks Hospice Care in Abilene, TX. Leon was born in July 9, 1934 in Roby, TX., to George Alva and Veda Opal (Hale) West. He married Frances Jean Brittain in Rotan, TX. on December 24, 1953.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, brother J.C. West, and wife Frances of 62 years. He is survived by five children; Bobby West (Janet) of El Paso, Helen Marr (Loyd) of Abilene, Debora Parker (Lyn) of Hamlin, Lorrie Craig (Michael) of Abilene and Alva West (Leah) of Lafayette, LA. Leon was blessed with over 20 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers; Don West (Margie) of Abilene, Jerry West (Carolyn) of Stith, and Jimmy West (Sandy) of Abilene, one sister Audra Sue Horton (Jerry Don) of Merkel, one brother-in-law Bradley Brittain of Cypress, TX.
Leon served over 20 years to the military serving in Korea, Germany and Vietnam. After retiring in 1973 as Senior Motor Sergeant 1st Cavalry 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood, TX., Leon joined with his father- in- law, Milton Teague, building and remodeling houses in Fisher, Jones, Kent and Scurry counties until he semi- retired in 2004. He continued doing small repair jobs until 2013. Leon is also known for planting and maintaining community gardens for various churches and people in Rotan.
Leon honored the past and present veterans of Fisher and Jones County by raising money for flags to place on every known veterans resting place on Memorial Day each year.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to West Texas Rehabilitation, Hendricks Hospice of Abilene, or the charity of your choice.
