Gordon Crawford

January 15, 1918 — August 6, 2016

G.W. (Shorty) Crawford, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend was called to his eternal resting place on August 6, 2016. He was born January 15, 1918, to Bud Burton and Eula Mae Campbell Crawford.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church of Rotan, with burial following at Belvieu Cemetery, directed by Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.
He was reared in a family of sharecroppers who traveled as necessary to find work during the Great Depression, which made it difficult to attend school. He was educated in the community of Royston and attended school periodically through the 7th grade, sometimes completing multiple grades in one year. The family was musical and taught themselves to play stringed instruments and sing together in harmony. Music and the love of the Lord brought joy through hard times. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rotan, TX for 54 years where he sang in the choir and served the church with love. He loved his family and friends, especially enjoying playing dominoes at the gin, sharing stories and jokes and playing music. Always..playing music. One of the greatest joys of his life was when he met the love of his life, Evelyn Kersh, and they were able to buy their own land to farm cotton.
He is survived by his daughters Rebekah Thornton and husband Mike of Center Point, TX, Cheribeth Stewart and husband Eddie of Harper, TX and Mary Lynn Hokett and husband Paul of Lubbock, TX; sisters Eva Louise Ratliff of Paris, TX and Doris Dean Floyd of Denison, TX; 6 grandchildren, Adam Thornton and wife Melanie, Katie Spence and husband Brian, Dave Stewart and wife Tracy, Josh Stewart and wife Amanda, Hilary Compton and husband Taylor and Ginger Hokett. Eleven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, his parents, his brothers Floyd Odell and Loyd Franklin, his sisters Era Beatrice and a sister Dora Mae who died as a 2 year old.
He will be missed.
