Harold Eldon Roberts “Gran” passed away on July 2, 2024 in Hospice care in Abilene, Texas. He was born on June 15, 1932, to his parents Joseph and Dessie Roberts. Harold grew up in Rotan and attended Rotan High School before furthering his education with some college courses.
On February 10, 1952, Harold married the love of his life, Carol Sparks. Shortly after their marriage, Harold was drafted into the Army to serve his country during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. He worked at the gin for a time, and after working at the “gyp mill” for 17 years while farming on his off shifts, he farmed full time until retiring to take care of Carol during her last days on earth.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Harold had a passion for antiques and arrowheads. His hobbies reflected his curious and nurturing personality—described as loving and caring by all who knew him.
Harold is survived by his two sons, Robin Roberts (Charlotte) of Rotan, and Rocky Roberts (Tonya) of Campbellton, Texas; daughter, Risa Roberts of Rotan; sister, Francene McKinney; six grandchildren, Dustin McWhirter (Casey Price), Kendall Jones (Randy), Brady Adams (Lacohn), Riley Roberts (Emalee), Rori DeLee (Zane), and Retta Roberts; four great-grandchildren, Scarlett Jones, Sawyer Jones, Truitt Adams, and Lanee Roberts.
He was preceded in death by his cherished wife Carol Sparks Roberts; his parents; and two sisters.
Visitation will be held at the Weathersbee Ray Funeral Home on July 5, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The funeral service will take place at the First Baptist Church of Rotan on July 6, 2024 at 10:00 AM with interment to follow in Belvieu Cemetery.
Harold was dedicated to serving the Lord. He served as a deacon for a large part of his life serving at Cross Roads Baptist and First Baptist churches. After Carol passed away 17 years ago, Harold was happiest when surrounded by his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.
Harold Eldon Roberts will always be remembered for his kindness, dedication to family and community, and for leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
