James Carter,87, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2022. Visitation will be Friday, July 22, 2022 at First Baptist Church Rotan from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Services will follow at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Sardis Cemetery, directed by Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.
James was born January 30, 1935, in Rotan, Texas to C.C. Carter and Clara Morrow Carter. James graduated from Rotan High School in 1953 and attended Hardin Simmons University until drafted into the United States Army in 1957.
He married Darlene Smith in 1962. Together they raised three sons, Darrell Carter, David Carter and Jerry Carter. James worked for the John Deere House for 46 years and served his community on many boards. James’ life was characterized by service.
He was a Christian and was a member of the First Baptist Church Rotan where he served as Deacon, song leader and choir director. He also sang at many funerals, weddings, and revivals. James loved serving the Lord and it was evident in his daily life.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; mother-in-law and father-in law; two sisters, seven brothers, two brothers-in-law, and six sisters-in-law.
James is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Darlene; three sons, Darrell (Donna) Carter, David Carter, and Jerry (Vera) Carter; four sisters-in-law, Mary Carter, Janice Smith Brown (Duane), Frankie Young and Sally Murff; four grandchildren, Aaron Howton, Lacie Valadez (Richie), Zoe Carter, and Jac Carter; two great grandchildren, Analeigh Valadez, and Vivian Valadez; long time family friends, Floyd Garcia Jr. and Bobby Gruben; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
