Janie Martinez of Rotan passed away September 16, 2021. Services will be 10:00am on Monday, September 20, 2021, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Rotan with burial to follow in El Ranchito Cemetery. A Rosary will be held at 6:00pm on Sunday, September 19, 2021, at the Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.
Janie was born to the late Natividad and Carmen (Fira) Vasquez. She was the oldest daughter of nine children. When her father died, she helped raise her brothers and sisters, so she was unable to attend school. Even though she had no formal education she was a very intelligent woman. She could sew cloths with or without patterns. Janie also didn’t need recipes to cook. Her food was always authentic and delicious. Her chicken enchiladas were her most requested.
Janie worked with her husband Joe at their service station for many years but later she helped many families as a caregiver for their elderly loved ones. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She also loved being outside working on her yard and rearranging and decorating her home. Janie’s tables capes were always beautiful.
Janie is preceded in death by her husband, Joe G. Martinez; her parents, Natividad, and Carmen Vasquez; three brothers, Pedro, Cipriano and Daniel Vasquez; one sister, Rebecca Montez; one grandson, Alonzo II Lujan; and one granddaughter, Alethea Flores.
She is survived three sons and daughters-in-law, Jesse and Rose Martinez of Rotan, Randy and Rachel Martinez of Santa Barbara, California, and Ronnie and Leanne Martinez of Rotan; seven daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Glen Holt of Lubbock, Rosemary and Paul Carrillo of Rotan, Irene and Alonzo Lujan of Rotan, Jean and Santos Flores of Rotan, MaryAnn and Alex Flores of Abilene, JoAnn and Rudy Yanez of Rotan, and Patricia and Val Morin of Rotan ; twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren with one on the way; two brothers, Will and Molly Vasquez of Whitefish, Montana, and Natividad Jr. of Salt Lake City, Utah; and two sisters, Dominga Tovar of Arlington, Texas and Dellas and Richard Wagner of Grand Prairie, Texas.
Mask are required at the Funeral Home and at Saint Joseph Catholic Church.
