Jay Ruth Hendon, 92, of Rotan, passed away July 8, 2014 at Abilene Regional Medical Center. A funeral service will be held Friday, July 11 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Rotan with Werth Mayes of Stephenville officiating. Burial will follow in Belvieu Cemetery under the care of WeathersbeeRay Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at WeathersbeeRay Funeral Home, 111 N. McKinley in Rotan.
Jay was born February 23, 1922 in Eskota, Texas to Viola Griffith and Lee Hendon. He was raised and attended school in McCaulley. At the age of 17, Jay joined the United States Navy and joined his brothers, Ernest, W.B. and Terrell in World War II. On April 3, 1943, Jay married Stella Marie Sloan at the Baptist parsonage in Rotan.
Jay, a lifelong hard worker and jack of all trades, owned and operated Hendon Motor Company, a wrecking service, farmed, and served as a Fisher County Commissioner for 24 years. An avid fisherman, he spent many days at Stamford Lake with his family and fishing buddies. Jay was a lifetime fan of the Dallas Cowboys and made yearly trips to Dallas for games with good friends. He was a friend to all and always had a smile on his face. He loved being with his family and was loved dearly by them. Jay was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rotan and an honorary member of the Rotan Fire Department.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents wife of 61 years, Stella Marie sisters Bernice Loving and Jo Ann Morris brothers W.B., Ernest, and Terrell Slats Hendon.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Gruben and husband Jim, and Jaye Neice Clements and husband Bret of Rotan grandchildren Misty Rutherford and husband Jim of Rotan and Bethany Ashlock and husband Justin of Oplin greatgrandchildren Jaydon, Chesney, Justin, and Dakota brother Johnny Hendon and wife Anise of Harvey, Louisiana brotherinlaw Leroy Morris of Dumas special friends Jerry Cotton and Belinda Clawson and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Rotan Volunteer Fire Department, First Baptist Church of Rotan, or your favorite charity.
