Joann Young

July 20, 1931 — September 24, 2015

Joanne Marie (Logan) Young, 84, was called home to be with the Lord on September 24, 2015. Joanne was born on July 20, 1931, in Rhome, Texas, to Harry H. and Marie Fergason Logan.
Joanne grew up in Wise County, Texas, near the small town of Rhome. As the children of a family of farmers and ranchers, Joanne and her two younger brothers helped with the chickens and livestock, farming and harvest. Joanne enjoyed being in the kitchen with her mother, helping to prepare meals for the men who worked from sun-up to sundown. They rode the school bus each day to the Rhome School, and regularly congregated at the home of their "Grannie" Logan after Sunday church services, along with uncles and cousins.
Joanne attended Texas Woman's University and graduated in 1952 with a degree in Home Economics Education. Upon graduation, she took a teaching job in a small cotton-farming community in west Texas. These were fun and memorable times with her students and co-workers, and it was in nearby Rotan that she met her husband, John Paul Young, at the Church of Christ in Rotan. When John Paul graduated from Texas A&M, he and Joanne were married on December 28, 1954, at her parents' home in Rhome, Texas.
Joanne and John Paul lived in Midland, Texas, from 1968 to 2011. They were faithful members of the Golf Course Road Church of Christ in Midland for over 40 years. Joanne loved people, and she was very active as a Bible class teacher, sorority sister, and advocated for Christian education at every opportunity. She also taught kindergarten and elementary children at Midland Christian School for 15 years. Summer vacations with her grandkids were highlights, as well as trips to College Station for Aggie football games with John Paul.
As the granddaughter of a member of the founding Board of Trustees of Abilene Christian University, Joanne was raised to value an education. She and John Paul established the Logan-Young Endowed Scholarship at ACU in 2011, with the goal of assisting young people in pursuing a Christian education.
Everyone who knew Joanne loved her. Every child who came within her vicinity was spoken to and blessed. She created a home where all were welcome, and the smells of bacon and coffee filled the air. She and John Paul were devoted to family, to the Lord, and his church.
John Paul passed to heaven on September 20, and Joanne has followed him quickly. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Bud and Mickey Logan, and by brother Harry Logan, Jr., of Rhome, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Mark Atchley of Grapevine; granddaughter Jennifer Atchley of Dallas; granddaughter and husband Jana and Matt Lambro of Dallas; and grandson and wife John Mark and Marie Atchley of San Antonio, and cherished nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of The Carlyle at Stonebridge Park in Southlake, Texas, for their excellent care and support. A memorial service will be held in both Joanne's and John Paul's honor on Sunday, September 27, 2015, at 3:00 p.m., at The Hills Church of Christ-Southlake campus, 2501 Southlake Blvd., Southlake, Texas 76092. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 3, at 2:00 p.m., at Belvieu Cemetery in Rotan, Texas.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Logan-Young Endowed Scholarship, Abilene Christian University, at ACU Box 29132, Abilene, Texas 79699, and to Midland Christian School in Midland, Texas.
