John Lathel Lawlis passed from this life into eternity on June 3, 2017 at Hendricks Hospital in Abilene, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Roby, at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at the Roby Cemetery. There will be a visitation held on Monday, June 5, 2017 from 6 to 8 pm at Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home in Rotan.
He was the second child of four born to John and Lottie Lawlis. He was raised in the Golan Community also know as the Lawlis Flats.
He graduated from Noodle High School in 1948. He attended Tarleton College in Stephenville and was enrolled in the military program. He was sent to Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas where he trained on field artillery. He never saw active duty.
In 1950 he met Della Coreen Griffin at a basketball game in McCaulley, Texas. She was the love of his life. They married on September 14, 1951 at the Methodist parsonage in Trent, Texas. They made their home in Roby, Texas. They had two children. John worked approximately forty years for National Gypsum Company in Rotan.
They joined the First United Methodist Church in Roby in the 1960's and were active members for many years. He was involved in Kairos Prison Ministry, local jail ministry, and Walks to Emmaus. He was a Gideon.
He is proceeded in death by his parents; brother, Doyle Lawlis; and sister, Gloria Lawlis.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Della; a son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Suz'anne Lawlis of Louisiana; a daughter Linda Miller of Buffalo Gap; two grandchildren, Melissa Miller Morman and husband Kurtis of Buffalo Gap, and Mitchell Miller of Abilene; one great-grandchild, Damien. He is also survived by his brother, Buddy Lawlis and wife, Rita of Lubbock.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Roby, or to the charity of your choice.
