John Young

December 30, 1932 — September 20, 2015

John Paul Young, 83, was called home to be with the Lord on September 20, 2015. John was born on December 30, 1932, in Rotan, Texas, to John M. and Juanita Whitmore Young.

John Paul grew up in Rotan, where his father and grandfather owned and operated a grocery and feed store, Youngs' Market. As a boy, he worked at his father's store, enjoyed summer days at the Rotan swimming pool, and saw every movie that came to town. He excelled at tennis, and was district singles champion his senior year at Rhome High School. Among his fondest memories were two trips to Mexico City, with Rotan classmates and teachers.

John Paul attended Texas A&M University, class of '54, where he graduated with a Business Administration degree. He met his wife, Joanne Logan, while she was teaching Home Economics in Hobbs, Texas, and they were married on December 28, 1954, at her parents' home in Rhome, Texas.

John Paul spent his working career in the oil and gas industry in west Texas, working as an accountant and CPA for Exxon (then Humble Oil) and other oil and gas entities in Midland. He and Joanne were faithful members of Golf Course Road Church of Christ in Midland for over 40 years, and they supported countless mission and relief efforts. They also supported Midland Christian School, where Joanne taught for 15 years, and several Christian universities, establishing the Logan-Young Endowed Scholarship at Abilene Christian University in 2011.

John Paul followed Aggie football, and was rarely seen without a Texas A&M cap. He loved to take road trips with his family. He was a lifetime learner and voracious reader, and enjoyed the New York Times crossword puzzle every morning, which he would work to completion before noon.

He was a faithful husband, father, and friend. As an only child, he cared for his own parents as they aged, with the help of his wife Joanne.

John is survived by his wife, Joanne Marie (Logan) Young; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Mark Atchley of Grapevine; granddaughter Jennifer Atchley of Dallas, granddaughter and husband Jana and Matt Lambro of Dallas, and grandson and wife John Mark and Marie Atchley of San Antonio.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Carlyle at Stonebridge Park in Southlake, Texas, for their excellent care and support. Memorial gifts may be made to the Logan-Young Endowed Scholarship, Abilene Christian University at ACU Box 29132, Abilene, TX 79699, or to Midland Christian School in Midland, Texas.
