J.W. Floyd, age 90, longtime resident of Bartlesville, OK, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at his daughters home in Columbus, GA, after a brief battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at 10:00 a.m., at WethersbeeRay Funeral Home in Rotan, TX. Visitation will be held before the service at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Belvieu Cemetery in Rotan, under the direction of WeathersbeeRay Funeral Home.
Joseph Washington J.W. Floyd was born on November 10, 1924, in Rotan, TX, the eighth of ten children, to John Nelson Floyd and Maude Elizabeth Kersh Floyd. J.W. grew up on a farm outside Roby, TX. He attended school in Roby, where he was a foursport letterman at Roby High School. In 1943, one year shy of graduating, J.W. was drafted into the U.S. Navy. As a member of the Naval Armed Guard, he served as a gunner on several merchant marine vessels, and sailed twice around the world.
After being discharged at the end of World War II, J.W. attended college at North Texas State University now the University of North Texas, where he was a member of the track team. He graduated in 1949, with a B.A. in Business Management. J.W. worked first at Sears Co., and then went to work at Phillips Petroleum Company in 1955, where he worked as a credit manager. His career at Phillips took him from Houston, TX, to Kansas City, KS, and then to Bartlesville, OK. J.W. retired from Phillips in 1985. He and his wife, Florene, were charter members of Bartlesville Southern Baptist Church.
J.W. married Florene McGrew, of Rotan, TX, on August 26, 1949, in Galveston, TX. They were married for 61 years until her death in 2011. J.W. was also preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, and three brothers. He is survived by his two daughters, Allison Granger Robert of Columbus, GA, and Joy Canfield Merle of New York, NY, four grand children, Derek Granger of Columbus, GA, Laura Granger of Orlando, FL, Audrey Canfield of New York, NY, and Sophia Canfield of New York, NY, one sister, LaVerrel Pittman, of Albany, TX, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of J.W. can be made to the Bartlesville Southern Baptist Church Building Fund, 5111 Nowata Road, Bartlesville, OK, 74006.
