Juanita "Nita" M. Smith, 88, of Rotan passed away Thursday, September 7, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 3:30pm, Sunday, September 10, 2017, at the First Baptist Church in Rotan. Burial will follow in Belvieu cemetery. A family visitation is scheduled for Saturday, September 9, 2017, from 5pm until 7pm, at Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.
Juanita Morgan Smith was born October 24, 1928, in Sweetwater, TX, to Leonard C. Morgan and Edna (Crowley) Morgan. She graduated from high school at age 16. Nita then went on to receive her Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, from Texas Tech University. Nita married the love of her life, Billy James Smith on November 30, 1950, in Rotan. She worked as an elementary school teacher and taught at Rotan Elementary School for 40 of her 42 years as an educator. Nita was passionate about teaching children and continued teaching in various ways after her retirement. Family was of the upmost importance to Nita, she was a very proud mother and grandmother. She was also very community minded, always participating in different events within the community. Nita was a loving mother, wife, daughter, sister, and grandmother. She will be dearly missed by all those that knew her and loved her.
Nita was preceded in death by her loving husband, Billy Smith; her parents, Leonard and Edna Morgan; and her brother, Fortner Morgan.
Nita is survived by her children, Randy Smith and wife Jeannie of Seguin, Ken Smith and wife Marcia of San Antonio, and Debbie Copenhaver and husband Steve of Lubbock; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
