Melvin was born July 8, 1934, at Longhorn Valley to Lucy Alberta Clegg and Robert Grundy Thomson. He was a proud graduate of Hobbs High School and served his country in the Korean War. Melvin married Velma Burk in Abilene on February 14, 1962 and they moved to Roby in 1963. He worked for the Texas Department of Transportation until retirement. Melvin was always busy, whether he was wood working, driving the school bus for the students field trips, or spoiling his grandchildren. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was an usher for many years. Melvin was also a member of the Roby Volunteer Fire Department, Roby Cemetery Board, Roby City Council, and was named Roby Citizen of the Year in 2002. He is preceded in death by his parents, four sisters Mary Boydstun, Delia Hardin, Dorothy Head, and Laura Goodrum, and two brothers R.L. Thomson and Perry Thomson.
Melvin is survived by his wife of almost fiftytwo years, Velma Burk of Roby two sons and daughtersinlaw, Scott and Pat Thomson and Darry and Teresa Thomson, all of Roby daughter and soninlaw, Sheree and Steve Mathison of Maine seven grandchildren, C.J. Freeman, Chris Thomson, Ryan Thomson, Alexis Thomson, Heath Mathison, Lindsey Thomson, and Sadie Thomson one greatgrandchild, Ian Thomson one greatgrandchild due any day, Daily Ponder two sisters, Thelma Burk of Roby and Lillian Rister of Waco brothersinlaw and sistersinlaw, Louise and Joe Miliron, Lila Snell, Ila Burk, Viola Sam and Donald Wilson, Linda Thomson, and Lathum and Linda Burk.
In lieu of flowers, Melvins family has requested donations to be made to the Roby Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 304, Roby, TX 79543 or the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 460, Roby, TX 79543.
