On Monday, March 10, 2025, Obie Gene Kelley, Jr. went to his heavenly home to join his beloved parents, Obie Gene and Patsy Lee Kelley.
Born on April 12, 1953, in Rotan, Texas, Obie was raised in the community he loved. After graduating high school, he continued his education at Texas Tech University, earning a degree in Agriculture. His career with the USDA took him all over West Texas, with his final post before retirement in Amarillo, Texas.
Obie leaves behind a family who adored him and his endless tales of mischief. His devoted wife of 34 years, Freda Mae Kelley. His son, Dru Murray, and wife Mitzi, along with their children—Chandler, Cutter, Hank, and his great-granddaughter Callie Jo (aka. Calico). His daughter, Beth Hime, and her children, Harlee and Gavin Lingo. His brother, Nathan Kelley, and wife Tammie of Rotan. His nephew, Guy Kelley. His niece, Lindy, and her husband, Jubal Williamson.
Obie loved reminiscing about his childhood adventures, especially his times at Rough Creek and working cattle alongside his lifelong friend, Dee Whittington. He also cherished the incredible friendships he built during his time at Texas Tech, often sharing stories about the legendary "Bob Wills Crew"—a close-knit group that included John Spires, Dana Bell, Lynette Graves, William "Cleve" Cleveland, and Eugene McKimmey. The laughter, camaraderie, and memories they shared were a source of joy throughout his life.
His family will always cherish the stories he told, the wisdom he shared, and the love he poured into every moment.
