Shirley McHaney passed away on July 9, 2018 at the age of 98. Visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Wednesday, July 11 at the Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Thursday, July 12 at The First Baptist Church in Roby, followed by burial in the Roby Cemetery.
Shirley was born on July 21, 1919 in Sylvester, TX, the youngest of three children to parents Arch and Ada Belle Griffin.
She earned a bachelor's degree from the Texas State College for Women (now Texas Woman's University) in Denton, TX and a Master's degree from Hardin-Simmons University.
Shirley was a beloved teacher who spent the majority of her 35+ year career teaching 1st grade at Roby Elementary School, where she influenced hundreds of members of the community. A loyal member of The First Baptist Church of Roby, Shirley was the church pianist for many years. She was a successful farmer, an avid gardener, a renowned baker, a wonderful mother, and an exceptional Green Grannie to her three grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to her real family, Shirley had an ever-growing extended family of friends that loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her two older brothers, Vernon and Raymond, and her husband, James Herbert McHaney, to whom she was married for 62 years, from October 14, 1941 until his death in 2004.
She is survived by sons James McHaney Jr. and wife Anita, and Stephen McHaney and wife Reba; grandchildren Andrea Maynard and husband Mick, Bonney Wilkinson and husband Robert, and Donovan McHaney and wife Jennifer; great-grandchildren Taylor, Sydney, Ella, Kate, and Colton Maynard; Carter, Jackson, and Grady Wilkinson; and Aiden and Keira McHaney.
