Tyrus Harrison

Tyrus (Tye) Harrison, 88 of Rotan passed away January 14, 2018 at a hospital in Abilene, Texas. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Rotan with Tommy Rosenblad officiating. Burial will be at Belvieu Cemetery in Rotan directed by Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the funeral home.

Born August 15, 1929 in a three-room farm laborer's house on the Schick Farm west of Rotan in Fisher County, Texas, Tye was the son of Robert L. and Jewell (Coan) Harrison. Tye graduated from Rotan High School in December, 1946. Tye married Laverne Jenkins on February 6, 1948 in Rotan. Tye started work with Gold Building Products in 1947 and stayed with the National Gypsum Company for 47½ years. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Rotan where he served as a deacon, taught Sunday School, and sang in the choir. He was also a member of the Lions Club.

Tye raised a German shepherd dog named Tubby that served 3 years in WWII on the island of Okinawa. An excerpt from the "Veterans of Fisher County" stated that "One night Tubby, scenting danger, growled a warning to Sargent Ralph Stille where he fired a burst from his machine gun and at morning light, a stark naked Japanese corpse lay silent with his weapon. Tubby was given an honorable discharge on February 26, 1946."

He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Joyce Levens, and brother-in-law, Carol Levens; his daughter, Brenda Sheehan, son-in-law, Jim Sheehan, and one grandson, Bryan Campbell.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Laverne, a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Rick Campbell of Stamford; a son and daughter- in-law, Brian Keith and Teresa Harrison of Rotan; grandchildren, Brian (and Danette) Sheehan, Brandon (and Kristi) Sheehan, Mikeal (and Stormie) Harrison, Jeffery (and Meagan) Campbell, Jessica (and James) Harrison Flores, Lisa (and Kyle) Campbell Morrison; 12 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to First Baptist Church of Rotan.
